App State Baseball traveled to War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday and lost 4-2 to North Carolina A&T, which scored two runs apiece in the first and fifth innings.
Phillip Cole (3-for-4), Luke Drumheller (2-for-3 with two runs scored) and Austin St. Laurent (2-for-4) had multi-hit games for the Mountaineers (6-9 ).
Gray LaSpaluto made his first start for App State before giving way in the fifth to Caleb Cross, who allowed one hit over the next 1.2 innings. Cameron Kepley struck out the last six batters he faced in two scoreless innings.
It was the last game before the start of Sun Belt play for App State, which hosts Georgia Southern for a three-weekend series that begins Friday at 5 p.m. in Boone.
App State cut its deficit late in the set, scoring once in the seventh-and-ninth.
Drumheller singled with two out in the seventh, moved up to third on a Cole single and scored on an RBI single from Alex Aguila. A flyout with the bases loaded ended this frame.
App State’s first three batters from the ninth singled out, though the first out came on a first-to-third attempt on base. Drumheller moved to third and Braxton Church (for Cole) advanced to second before Aguila walked to charge the bases with one out.
The choice of a defender scored a point and left two runners in scoring position before a groundout ended the game.
