Deaton Chris Anthony Shares New Track With Benee ‘Good Buy My Old Life’

Acclaimed musician and visual artist Deaton Chris Anthony unveils a new song today, “Goodbuy My Old Life”, a collaboration with New Zealand star BENEE. The video, directed by Judge Vaughn Ott, is also out now. The track is taken from Deaton’s debut album, SID THE KID, due out July 29th on Dirty Hit – pre-save/pre-order it here.

Deaton says:
Kansas was my home all my life before I moved to Los Angeles. Kansas is where I thought I had to do one thing and one thing only. Bowl. When I was 12, I got the highest score in my age bracket in all of Kansas. 246. I became bowling captain in high school and demolished my best score with a 286 at regionals. Over the years, I have never been able to beat my best score. These 14 missed pins are haunting me. A 300 is every bowler’s dream! I thought bowling was my goal, but I was wrong.

Moving to Los Angeles crushed my bowling career and my life became a frantic race. Becoming the biggest pop star in the world is not easy after all. It’s rough. It’s the war. I’ve learned so much over the years recording music, but I have to be honest, these days all I think about is bowling.

Bowling isn’t just a sport or something to do with your friends. It’s a way of life and it’s my life! Style. Where are we at bowling these days? Have you seen what the pros are wearing? Ouch. Bowling is in desperate need of a rebrand. A revolution! My mission is to bring style back to bowling. Maybe even as stylish as the on-screen bowling animations when you get a strike?
Deaton shared a handful of tracks from the album – ‘iScream’ featuring Dirty Hit bandmate beabadoobee, ‘Shed Head’ and a three-track short, ‘REAL EYES REALIZE REAL LIES’, directed by creative collaborator Julian Klincewicz .

SID THE KID is the story of the main character, a slightly fictionalized version of young Deaton, and his older brother Korbin growing up in Kansas (where the real Deaton also grew up).

“I draw my inspiration from childhood. I have an older brother, Korbin. This record is dedicated to him,” says Deaton. “We were driving through rural Kansas with the sunroof open. We were listening to Dashboard Confessional, a lot of emo stuff, and he was shouting the lyrics looking at the stars. That’s where SID THE KID: rural Kansas takes place. Picture this : I was a ten year old chubby boy and my nickname was Sid the Kid. Korbin and I lived in this little cabin in the middle of this forest. This cabin had our computer, our television and all our music. We walked to school nearby and we hung out at the skate park and bowling alley.

SID THE KID takes Deaton in a bold new direction as the synth genius’ first-ever guitar-based music, working with a roster of acclaimed artists including Filipino-British singer Beabadoobee, rising New Zealand star BENEE and multi-instrumentalist Mac Demarco, who plays bass and drums on the album track “Friends Don’t Hurt Each Other”. Deaton collaborated on the album’s creative direction with multidisciplinary artist Julian Klincewicz (Beyonce, Jay-Z, Louis Vuitton, Acne, Calvin Klein).

The visual language of the record is a spectrum of colors, textures and emotions that runs the line between modern nostalgia and contemporary visual vernacular. Each video picks up and pays homage to different textures of childhood memories from the early 2000s – VHS, Sunday morning cartoons, skate videos on DVD, old Super 8 family movies and reality TV.

Deaton released a project, BO Y, in 2019, which Vogue hailed as “a playful collection of sample-rich songs that bridge the gap between R&B and electronic pop.” The Los Angeles-based musician is also a visual artist, fashion designer and painter. He produced for Charli XCX (“New Shapes” with Caroline Polachek and Christine & The Queens) and Clairo, was commissioned to do looks for Billie Eilish and collaborated with VANS, Evan Mock and a host of others across the mediums.
