‘Eye-catching’ Hubbub campaign to reduce litter launches in Bristol


Four meter high wave made of rubbish floating over Bristol Harbor amid targeted messages installed in Bristol to encourage people not to leave litter behind.

In partnership with Bristol Waste and Bristol City Council, environmental charity Hubbub is launching the ‘Bristol’s Binning’ campaign which aims to help reduce the amount of litter on the streets of Bristol and stop it from making its way into the port and towards the sea.

More than 50 colorful and eye-catching bins are installed in the city center near takeaways, nightlife spots and parks, as well as stadiums, transport hubs, in and around markets and the port.

The new design bins will feature fun versions of song lyrics, play patterns and playful puns, and there will be glow-in-the-dark bins and bins that cheer people on and play music from the jungle when open.

New recycling bins for plastic bottles, cans and glass will also be installed for the first time alongside Bristol’s existing general bins and coffee cup recycling bins to make it as easy as possible for people to recycle when of their travels, campaign organizers said.

Colorful voting bins for general trash and “ballot boxes” for cigarette butts will appear to entice people to vote with their litter on hot topics too, such as “Surf vs. Skate”, “Drum & Bass vs. Techno” or “Casa Amor vs Main Villa”.

Bristolians can also use the LitterLotto app which offers a free raffle, with regular spot prizes and jackpots to throw away their litter.

In a bid to galvanize the public into action, a giant wave art installation made from waste has been created by eco-artist Wren Miller, with support from Bristol Council, Bristol Waste and Hargreaves Lansdown.

The wave is made with 90kg of rubbish, the equivalent of the volume of rubbish dumped on Baldwin Street on a single busy Friday, to highlight the scale of rubbish in Bristol city centre.

Officially launching the campaign, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees unveiled The Wave sculpture on the morning of November 2 in the harbor where it will be displayed for three months, before moving to land in “prime” locations around the city. downtown.

Mayor Rees said: ‘The Wave sculpture shows the extent of the problem in Bristol and why we need to act. Not only does litter look unsightly, but it can be harmful to humans and animals, especially if it ends up polluting the oceans.

“We hope this campaign captures the attention of the people of Bristol and encourages them to think twice before throwing away the rubbish after a night out. By working together, we can make Bristol a city we can all be proud of.

The campaign has been developed using insights from Hubbub research, the charity’s Neat Streets campaign in Bournemouth and working with partners and residents to ensure it reaches the right people in the environments they are most likely to throw.

Hubbub Creative Partner Natasha Gammell said: “Bristol is known for leading the way when it comes to the environment, but litter continues to be an issue, particularly at night as people take advantage of the nightlife.

“We hope these hilarious bins that play catchy tunes and glow in the dark will turn heads and encourage people to use them and not leave their trash lying around the city. With this campaign we can show that Bristol wins by grouping!”
