Horvath triggers a rally against the state of the application

CHAPEL HILLMacHorvath delivered an RBI double with one out late in the eighth inning to score the game-winning run and propel No. 13 North Carolina to a 4-2 win over Appalachian State at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday.

The Diamond Heels improved to 18-3 overall this season and the Mountaineers fell to 7-12.


With the game tied at 2-2 heading into the eighth, the Diamond Heels got two runs in the frame and Caden O’Brien hit the side in the ninth to close out the win.



Danny Seretti walked a walk to start the Diamond Heels’ eighth-inning rally, then scored on Horvath’s double against the wall. Hunter Stokely was then intentionally walked on.


On the third strike throw at Alberto Osuna, Stokely was caught in a rundown trying to steal second base with Horvath at third base. Horvath took advantage of the pickle and slid home to give UNC a two-point lead.


Carolina had seven hits with Max Rimer, who made his first start of the season at catcher, collecting two of them. Riemer was one of three Diamond Heels with an RBI joining Horvath and Angel Zarate.


UNC used seven pitchers to claim the win with O’Brien (1-0) earning his first victory of the season. Eli Ellington (1-2) suffered the loss.



NOTABLES
• North Carolina improved to 16-0 at home this season and recorded their 20and straight win at Boshamer Stadium.
• UNC won its 16th straight game against Appalachian State and improved to 27-3 against the Mountaineers.
Angel Zarate picked on his first at bat to extend his on-base streak record to 44 games and his hitting streak to 21 games.
Vance Honeycutt left the game in the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch. Before being waived, he stole his ACC-leading 15th base of the season.
• Horvath drove in the winning run for the third time this season as the Diamond Heels trailed and/or tied in the sixth inning or later.
Tomas Frick his streak of consecutive starts was snapped at 63 games.



HOW DID IT HAPPEN
• Zarate doubled up right field to tackle Honeycutt, who opened the bottom of the first with a triple (UNC 1, APP 0).
• App State catcher Hayden Cross singled into center field to score Austin St. Laurent with the Mountaineers’ first run in the top of the third inning (UNC 1, APP 1).
• Riemer hit a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth to score Stokely, who doubled two hitters earlier (UNC 2, APP 1).
• Luke Drumheller homered to lead the start of the eighth, tying the game (UNC 2, APP 2).
• Horvath led Serretti with a one-out double late in the eighth. Horvath then stole the house with two outs (UNC 4, APP 2).



FOLLOWING
The Diamond Heels head to South Florida for a three-game series with ACC Coastal Division rival Miami starting Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
