Jaz Elise reminds us to give thanks on ‘Gratitude Riddim’ track

Winta James and his label Overstand Entertainment return with a brand new juggle called “Gratitude Riddim”, featuring versions by Jaz Elise, Samory I, Mortimer, Kumar, Naomi Cowan and Ras-I. Jaz Elise releases the project’s titular track: ‘Gratitude’ alongside visualizer shot by Yannick Reid.

The track is an ode to remaining grateful in the face of hardship; when giving up seems like the best option. “I remember writing this song before the pandemic and the sentiment remains true even now.” Jaz said. “Sometimes in the thick of things it’s hard to see the light and see a way forward. This song reminds us to keep moving forward and see our journey for what it is – a journey. We haven’t finished yet. We keep pushing. So, I think we can always find something to be grateful for when we really take a little time to see how far we’ve come while recognizing that we still have more to do and more hills to climb. It’s motivation to keep going and notice the blessings along the way..”

The juggling direction was set by Jaz Elise’s version as the project began at the start of the pandemic. “During the first year of the pandemic, the project was delayed as social distancing and other measures were put in place, but we resumed recording in 2021, and the other songs grew organically. with a great level of introspection on the part of the artists..” said Winta James. “I think the past two years have been tough for everyone, but we’re all still grateful for the little things that bring us joy and hope, and I think that comes through in the lyrics that each artist wrote for their song.

The “Gratitude Riddim” is a one-drop contemporary reggae riddim, featuring traditional drums and bass from legendary duo, Chris Meredith and Wilburn “Squidly” Cole. The songs, recorded during the COVID 19 pandemic, find the artists in a reflective mood, with their lyrics centering on themes of gratitude, love, faith and self-awareness. It’s a nod to the culture of “juggling”, a traditional aspect of Reggae and Dancehall music.
