July 08 (THEWILL) – In their second Group C match of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Super Falcons beat Botswana 2-0 to revive their title defense after the 2- 1 against South Africa.
Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre and Tochukwu Oluehi, who featured in the opening game against South Africa, were absent from the squad. Coach Randy Waldrum has changed his starting line-up for the game against Botswana’s Mares after Oshoala picked up the injury.
With Francisca Ordega and Rasheedat Ajibade cutting from the flanks, the Falcons had a strong start to the game thanks to an effective formation. The Falcons kept up the pressure and the Botswana team couldn’t stop them. In the 21st minute, Nigerian number nine Ifeoma Onumonu scored as he latched on to a pass from Halimatu Ayinde.
As this game was crucial for their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals, the Falcons maintained their dominance to end the first half with a narrow 1-0 advantage. Rita Chikwelu was replaced by Christy Ucheibe early in the second half and the latter quickly extended the Falcons advantage with an incredible header.
Not to slip as they did against South Africa, the Super Falcons kept control of the match until the final whistle. The result boosted their chances of moving past the group stage with a crucial game against Burundi next Sunday.
