Moving sucks for a variety of reasons.
The last time my wife and I packed up and moved was a little over three years ago. We moved from Bangor to Hampden, and unfortunately that meant that I had to redo almost my entire existence on some levels. We had to inform all of our utilities etc. our new address and complete a few change of address forms. . . It was painful.
And honestly, I missed local and national elections in 2019 because I never really made it to town hall to register to vote. I hate to miss a chance to vote. I also love my mail-in ballots. But since I wasn’t registered, I couldn’t do it either. It was crazy.
Maine is just one of the few states without online registration.
Ten other US states do not offer online registration. But as far as I can tell from looking around online, it’s going down a bit every year, except in some ultra-conservative states. But now, according to NDBMaine will join the majority of the country in offering online voter registration to its residents.
There will also be many other benefits. The platform that will be introduced by a third-party provider that has put out a call for tenders and that will be primarily funded by the federal government will facilitate other things as well. For example, you can use it to request a postal vote, check your registration status and even make appointments at the BMV.
Imagine being able to do that? This might help eliminate the long queues and waiting at the BMV, or at least put a stop to it. Obviously, not everyone will like this news, but we all know that you can’t please everyone all the time, right? Rule n°1 of our childhood… But for others, it will be excellent news. Welcome to 21st century Maine.
