“I Survived, It’s Over is a meditation on healing, dealing with trauma, letting go and finding peace,” said Rich Ruth frontman Michael Ruth. “I constantly experiment with sound until it reflects how I feel and tries to get something meaningful out of it.”
Rich Ruth – aka veteran Nashville-based musician Michael Ruth – took a break from touring with various bands in 2018 and devoted himself to composing ambient music in his small home studio, focusing on the diverse traditions of ambient, new age, spiritual jazz, Kosmiche, and minimalist music.
His ideas came to full fruition with the inclusion of additional players, combining his repetitive, buzzing synthesizer moves with improvisational improvisation to turn the material into something far more lush and unpredictable.
One summer morning, Ruth was taken at gunpoint and hijacked by two people outside her home. His music got him through this personal struggle, infusing his 2019 debut album, Calming Signals, with startling layers of angst and emotion. Where There’s Life followed in 2021, a collection of meditative pieces written in the early months of the pandemic manifesting the collective sense of uncertainty and loneliness of the time.
Recorded in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic and following a series of tornadoes that wreaked havoc in his North Nashville neighborhood, I Survived, It’s Over sees Rich Ruth push his music even further into sonic and emotional terrain. hitherto untapped.
Combining inventive sonic exploration, intricate instrumentation – from jagged guitars and swelling strings to flutes, saxophones, steel pedals and more. – and a transcendent passion for nature, Ruth has created a landmark work of organic and symphonic power, a deeply affirming musical movement that transforms the unease and grief of this difficult time into something strong, true and beautiful.
“Working on this music is a daily meditation,” explains Rich Ruth. “I wanted to encapsulate the tranquility and helplessness found in this process.”
