Tabcorp Park Melton upgrades on track

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting two upgrades to the state’s premier harness racing venue that will open Tabcorp Park Melton for more community events and provide a better experience for racing fans.

Racing Minister Martin Pakula today announced more than $1.63 million from the government Victorian Racing Industry Fund will be invested in opening the infield to the public and improving the lighting of the park with environmentally friendly LED floodlights.

Harness Racing Victoria is contributing an additional $545,000 for the upgrades.

The project will see the infield cleared and leveled, drainage and irrigation installed, and the site landscaped. A renovated indoor field will allow the club to use the space for marquees, children’s activities and other race day entertainment.

On non-racing days the space will be available for a range of activities including equestrian events, music festivals, trade shows or community activities.

The funding will also allow metal halide lights around the course to be replaced with dimmable LED floodlights, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

The upgrade will save more than $500,000 in electricity costs over 15 years and significantly reduce maintenance costs, as the new LED lights last 16 times longer than current lights. The new lighting will also improve broadcast quality and provide better viewing of the track for customers.

Both projects will support more than 30 jobs during construction over the next three months.

As racing minister Martin Pakula said

“We support these upgrades to help the harness racing industry create a strong and viable future.”

As MP for Melton Steve McGhie said

“Tabcorp Park Melton is an important facility for the local community, drawing visitors and participants to the area and providing a focal point for entertainment in Melton. This investment means there is another great asset for the local community.

“Thanks to the support of the Government of Victoria, we are able to move these two great initiatives forward, which strengthen our operations and further enhance our relationship and involvement with the Melton community.”
