Mumbai, Aug 29 (PTI) A mobile phone thief has been arrested by Mumbai police for allegedly demanding money from victims in his digital payment account, an official said on Monday.
The accused, Wasim Qureshi, is a columnist. He recently stole four mobile phones from colleagues at a bakery in suburban Kurla on his first day on the job, the official said.
Later, one of the colleagues managed to get Qureshi’s phone number and contacted him.
Qureshi told the victim that he would return their mobile phones once they transferred money to his digital payment account.
“The defendant started calling the victims every day asking for money. Fed up with his request for money, one of the victims filed an FIR. Qureshi was tracked down to Thane and caught. The police recovered ten cell phones in his possession,” the official said.
Talking about his modus operandi, the official said Qureshi used to visit various business units in Mumbai and demand work to survive. He then used to steal cell phones.
He never presented his proof of identity to escape arrest. Qureshi was convicted under section 380 (robbery from dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code, VB Nagar Police Sub-Inspector Bhausaheb Sonawane said. PTI ZA NSK NSK
