NANNING, March 17 (Xinhua) — Xu Baokun, 66, never imagined that one day she would become a social media influencer with nearly 140,000 followers.

Videos of Xu on short-video platform Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, playing the drums with total confidence have set the internet on fire, with netizens calling her “cool grandma”.

A farmer from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, she has worked in the fields since she was young. But, as she grew older, she developed ailments related to her spine, limiting her movements, which made her life tasteless.

However, things changed last year when Xu’s son, Yang He, who teaches music in neighboring Guangdong province, brought a drum set during his visit home.

Xu first saw the instrument as a loud novelty, but after watching her son’s performance a few times, she became interested in the drums.

To help Xu learn, his son recorded many instructional videos. And she gradually honed her skills through practice – from meticulous imitation to the ability to play a full song.

“It was difficult to learn to play the drums at first. I didn’t know anything about music. I never thought I could play so many songs,” Xu said, adding that since falling in love battery, she tried her best to free time for practice.

Through tireless efforts, she successfully mastered a few simple songs as well as many European and American classics. To her surprise, she also recovered from a lumbar spine problem.

Xu’s growing popularity also boosted her confidence in her drumming skills. She was invited to perform at weddings and on the local television channel.

Although Xu is nervous every time she takes the stage, as soon as she is in front of the drums, she is brimming with confidence, Yang said.

Yang posted short videos of her mother drumming on the Internet. He is sometimes seen playing Michael Jackson’s “moonwalk” while his mother drums along. These videos have gained popularity online, with netizens claiming that Xu looks like an energetic rock musician.

“He’s never too old to learn,” Xu said, adding that she will continue to challenge herself by learning more difficult music in order to keep her followers entertained.
