Two detained for deceiving online shoppers on the pretext of offering steep discounts: Newsdrum


New Delhi, Sep 19 (PTI) Two men have been arrested for allegedly deceiving people under the guise of selling clothes, mobile phones and other digital devices at heavily discounted prices, police said on Monday.

The defendants were identified as Dishant Khanna (31) and Manish Kumar (30).

One of the defendants created several fake accounts on the social networking site Instagram (IG) to post advertisements and deceived several over the past six months. They started cheating people to make easy money and improve their standard of living, police said.

The accused received advance payment digitally promising fast delivery of the items and then disappeared, they added.

According to the police, the matter came to light after a resident of Mukherjee Nagar alleged that he was defrauded of Rs 19,000 via an Instagram handle by the name of “”.

The IG account administrator showed him photos and screenshots, saying he was selling phones and accessories at discounted rates and delivering items on time.

Trusting him, the victim ordered a mobile phone and paid an advance of Rs 18,000 to a bank account and Rs 1,000 by Paytm. However, after taking full payment, the defendant neither took his calls nor delivered the cellphone, police said.

Deputy Police Commissioner (North West) Usha Rangnani said: “Our team mounted technical surveillance and scrutinized the details of the recipients’ bank accounts. “The amount debited from the complainant’s account was credited to a bank account and the alleged account holder was identified as Manish Kumar, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar,” she said.

Kumar was apprehended and he revealed that his friend Dishant Khanna was the mastermind. Subsequently, he was also detained, the DCP said.

“During interrogation, it was revealed that Khanna used to scam people under the guise of selling clothes, cell phones and other digital devices online, offering steep discounts, while Kumar used to receive and share the cheated money,” she added.

Police said two mobile phones along with SIM cards and three debit cards were recovered from the duo. PTI AMP RDT
