The Chairman of Tai Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Okpe Mkpagbone has commended Governor Nyesom Wike for his commitment to the promotion and development of sport.
He said the emergence of Rivers United FC as champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) was a clear indication of the extent to which the Governor’s efforts are bearing fruit.
Hon. Okpe said this when speaking to sportswriters on Sunday, shortly after United were officially crowned NPFL champions, at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the recent achievements recorded in sport in the state, most notably the victory of Rivers United, are the result of the governor’s commitment to the development of sport.
“I see the people of Rivers are thrilled to see the Governor’s commitment to athletic development projects yielding positive results.
“I am convinced that the creation of the Real Madrid Football Academy in Port Harcourt by the current administration will produce remarkable sportsmen and women.
“I believe the presidents of other LGAs, including myself, will follow in Governor Wike’s footsteps to create an avenue for Rivers’ sons and daughters to excel in sport,” Hon. says Okpe.
The LGA boss noted that since the governor took office, the state has not played second fiddle in social, political and cultural contests.
“It is exciting that the people of Rivers are not the last in social, political and cultural competitions since Governor Wike took office.
Today, almost all of our teams are doing well, which is the pride of the state in Nigeria and outside.
On behalf of the Tai people, I rejoice with His Excellency in the victory of Rivers United which has placed the state first among its peers,” he said.
